As of now, there are 17 character skins in total. Among them, there are 9 skins for 5-star characters, namely: Nilou, Diluc, Hu Tao, Shenhe, Ganyu, Klee, Kamisato Ayaka, Keqing, and Jean.
There are 8 skins for 4-star characters, which include: Kirara, Xiangling, Xingqiu, Kaeya, Lisa, Fischl, Ningguang, and Barbara.
Looking at the overall pace of Genshin's skin releases, it hasn't been particularly fast. Despite the game approaching its 5th anniversary, only 17 skins have been released. If we include the two upcoming summer skins in version 5.8, that brings the total to 19 skins.
Out of all these, there are both standard skins and special effect skins for 5-star characters. So far, Diluc is the only character to have a special effect skin.
It's worth noting that Diluc’s skin was released back in version 2.8, and with version 5.8 just around the corner, it means we've gone through three full version cycles without another 5-star special effect skin being added.
Of course, special effect skins are more expensive compared to regular 5-star skins, but they come with unique skill effects and animations, making them quite worthwhile for collectors.
According to recent leaks, version 5.8's summer skins will be given to Yelan and Bennett (images unrelated to the skins). Bennett’s 4-star skin will be available through in-game events. Counting this, players who’ve been around for a while will be able to claim up to 9 free skins in total.
Yelan’s skin is rumored to be the next 5-star special effect skin, making it the second one after Diluc. It will be purchasable and priced similarly to Diluc’s.
