Hugo’s signature W-Engine provides Crit Rate, which is crucial for his nuke-style burst damage playstyle. He heavily relies on stable crits to ensure damage consistency—reaching 100% crit rate is the ideal goal for any Hugo build, as missing a crit can result in significant damage loss. The W-Engine grants 24% Crit Rate, greatly boosting Hugo’s crit stat and making 100% crit rate much easier to achieve. This is a critical upgrade.
W-Engine Effects
① Crit Damage Boost
With the high Crit Rate already helping build balance, the W-Engine effect further complements it by offering 45% Crit DMG at refinement 1. This is a massive boost for Hugo, who lacks both crit rate and crit damage by default.
② DEF Ignore
When using [Enhanced Special Attack], [Chain Attack], or [Ultimate] to deal Ice DMG, Hugo gains 25% Defense Ignore. However, for standard “0+1” Hugo setups, he lacks other DEF Shred or DEF Ignore effects to stack with this, so the benefit is moderate at best. Still, it can synergize with “Shadowplay 2” for combined effects.
Should You Pull for Hugo’s Signature W-Engine “Sunfall Facade”?
This W-Engine’s effects are tailor-made for Hugo and easily fully utilized by him. It enhances his three primary burst damage skills. However, looking at the raw stats—45% Crit DMG and 25% DEF Ignore—the effects themselves aren’t top-tier when compared broadly.
Importantly, as the second Ice Attribute Attack Agent, Hugo can already perform well using other W-Engines. With Ellen’s signature, he can get 25% Ice DMG and 10% Crit Rate with a slight change in skill rotation. With Evelyn’s signature, he gains 50% Crit DMG outright. These are competitive options. If you already own one of these S-rank W-Engines, Hugo doesn’t need his signature to shine, making him a high value “0+0” character.
Of course, since Hugo is a true main DPS, increasing his raw stats will never be wasted. Raising his burst threshold could even allow you to skip a skill cycle in real combat. So if you don’t have a limited S-rank alternative, the signature W-Engine will provide significant upgrades, and it’s worth considering if you have the budget.
What W-Engines Can You Use Besides the Signature?
Deep Sea Visitor (Limited S-Rank)
Ellen’s signature. Same advanced stat (Crit Rate) as Hugo’s own. Its W-Engine effect gives 25% Ice DMG, and with proper skill rotations (e.g., basic attacks before chaining), you can also consistently trigger 10% Crit Rate. Hugo’s dash attack deals physical damage, so it won’t trigger the second crit buff, but this is still the best alternative—very close to the signature in performance.
Stringed Echoes (Limited S-Rank)
Evelyn’s signature. High general versatility. It gives Crit Rate as the base stat and a flat 50% Crit DMG, which Hugo can always benefit from. Even if the other effects are missed, this still makes it a very strong choice.
Strong Resonance (Event A-Rank)
An event-limited A-rank W-Engine. Offers Crit Rate and grants 9.6% ATK, which doubles if the target is under an Elemental Anomaly. Since Hugo can easily trigger Ice status, this synergy is excellent, making this the best A-rank option.
Cannon Rotor (Monthly Pass A-Rank)
Comparable to Strong Resonance. Grants 12% ATK unconditionally, but the Physical DMG bonus is wasted on Hugo. If you’ve already upgraded this engine, it’s still a decent option.
Conclusion
Hugo’s signature W-Engine “Sunfall Facade” greatly boosts both Crit Rate and Crit DMG, while also offering Defense Ignore. If you don’t own a limited S-rank W-Engine, the signature is a major upgrade and worth pulling if budget allows. But if you already have Ellen or Evelyn's W-Engine, they’re highly effective on Hugo too, and the performance gap isn’t huge—making the signature non-essential in those cases.
