The best Severian ZZZ build pairs his signature Incarcerating Grip (or The Brimstone) with 4-piece Dawn's Bloom + 2-piece Woodpecker Electro, CRIT Rate / Wind DMG / ATK% main stats, and Norma + Astra Yao. He's a Wind Attack DPS who shines at M0. Stock up with a Zenless Zone Zero top-up before November 11.

BETA Kit and W-Engine numbers on this page come from pre-release test data. We'll refresh them on this same page within 48 hours of the November 11 launch.
Here's the short version of how Severian plays. He stays on field, spams enhanced Basic Attacks, and dodges automatically. HoYoverse's own blurb calls him a "Powerful Wind DPS Agent" who "launches enhanced Basic Attacks to deal massive DMG" and "automatically dodges enemy attacks and counters."

Three beta mechanics shape the whole build. Learn them once and every gear choice below makes sense.
Optimal Setup (Additional Ability): with a Support, a Stun agent or a same-faction teammate, he gains +8.5 ATK per 1% CRIT Rate, capped at 100% CRIT Rate. That's up to 850 bonus ATK, so CRIT Rate is his top stat.
Endless Breeze (Core Passive, Lv7): CRIT DMG +60% and DMG +25%, plus another 30% DMG when a second Wind agent is in the squad.
Shadowflash and Flow: he enters battle with 2 Shadowflash stacks that auto-dodge hits you fail to dodge. Flow caps at 150, and 100 Flow fires his big finisher, Azure Wind's Shadowhunt.
Severian's limited channel is called "Answers in the Wind." It opens in Version 3.3 Phase 2, and Norma reruns alongside him on the same dates. His signature W-Engine, Incarcerating Grip, sits on the matching W-Engine channel.

Tip: your Exclusive Channel pity carries over from Phase 1, so skipping Phoenix doesn't waste progress. Check our ZZZ pity guide to see how close you are to soft pity before November 11.
His everyday outfit, Solemnly Impeccable, appears in Store > Today's Outfit at 1,350 Monochrome during the sale, then 1,680 Monochrome after it ends. It's a one-time purchase, not an event reward.
Free Polychrome helps too. Version 3.3 gives 300 Polychrome update compensation plus 300 Polychrome issue-fix compensation (claim before November 20, 23:59 UTC+8) for accounts at Inter-Knot Lv4 or higher before the October 21 update. The livestream code JRNY2SKY has already expired.
Is Severian Worth Pulling? (vs Phoenix)
Yes, if you want an easy, strong on-field DPS. Beta players describe him as simple to pick up, with auto-dodges built into his Basic Attack string. The big plus: his best support, Norma, reruns on the very same phase.
Phoenix and Severian, the two new S-Ranks of Version 3.3 · Source: HoYoverse / HoYoLAB
Phoenix is a different kind of unit. She's a Fire Anomaly agent whose kit lets Anomaly damage crit, while Severian is a Wind crit DPS. The community view is consistent: pick based on what your account lacks.
Pull Severian if: you need a main DPS, you want a Wind carry, you like Norma, or you prefer a hands-on Basic Attack playstyle with forgiving auto-dodges.
Pull Phoenix if: you already run an Anomaly team and want to push it further.
Decide before Nov 11: the banners don't overlap, and Phoenix leaves when Severian arrives.
Is M0 Severian good? Most beta players say yes. His core mechanics all sit at M0, and the common plan is M0 + signature (M0W1) rather than extra Mindscapes.

Best Severian W-Engines
Incarcerating Grip is his expected best-in-slot. Current beta data lists 713 base ATK and a 24% CRIT Rate sub-stat at Lv60. Its R1 passive adds CRIT Rate +20%, and Basic Attack hits grant ATK +10% and ignore 15% Wind RES for 16 seconds.

Why does it fit so well? That's 44% CRIT Rate from one item, and Optimal Setup turns it into roughly +374 extra ATK on top. Earlier beta builds showed different passive numbers, so treat these values as pre-release until launch.

Is the signature necessary? No, many players plan to skip it at first, and The Brimstone is the most-named fallback. One caveat from beta testers: Brimstone brings no CRIT Rate, so build extra CRIT Rate on discs to keep Optimal Setup fed.

Best Severian Drive Discs
Dawn's Bloom 4-piece is the clear pick. It gives Basic Attack DMG +20%, and another +20% Basic Attack DMG for 25 seconds after an Attack agent uses an EX Special or Ultimate. That's exactly how Severian deals damage.
For the 2-piece, choose by your CRIT Rate:
Woodpecker Electro (CRIT Rate +8%): the default. More CRIT Rate means more Optimal Setup ATK.
Branch & Blade Song (CRIT DMG +16%): use it once your CRIT Rate is already high, such as with Incarcerating Grip.
Wuthering Salon: a listed alternative if your Woodpecker pieces are weak.

Best Severian Main Stats and Substats
CRIT Rate does double duty on Severian. It raises crit chance and feeds Optimal Setup at 8.5 ATK per 1%. Meanwhile his CRIT DMG is already high: 78.8% at Lv60 in beta data, plus 60% from his Core Passive.

Quick math to plan your gear: every 10% CRIT Rate you add is +85 ATK through Optimal Setup, up to 100% CRIT Rate. Reaching the cap means +850 ATK, so CRIT Rate substats beat everything else.

Remember: Optimal Setup only turns on with a Support, a Stun agent or a same-faction teammate. Every team below includes at least one.
Best Severian Teams
Severian wants a Stun or Support partner who doesn't hog field time. Norma, who reruns with him, is the community's favorite breaker, and Astra Yao is the most common support. A second Wind agent such as Roxy unlocks his extra 30% Core DMG.

Severian Skill Priority and Materials
His damage comes from Basic Attacks, and Flow builds toward Shadowhunt. Based on the beta kit, this is the expected order for leveling:
Core Skill to Lv F: unlocks the full CRIT DMG and DMG bonus from Endless Breeze.
Basic Attack: Swift Edge, Raging Whirlwind and Azure Wind's Shadowhunt all scale here.
Chain Attack / Ultimate: big hits that also generate Flow (+35 and +100).
Dodge, then Special and Assist last.

Expected materials for a full build (pre-release data, standard Wind Attack pattern):
Promotion to Lv60: 4 Basic, 32 Advanced and 30 Pioneer's Attack Certification Seals, plus 800,000 Denny.
Agent EXP: 300 Senior Investigator Logs.
Five skills to Lv12: 25 Basic, 75 Advanced and 250 Specialized Windbite Chips, plus 5 Hamster Cage Passes and about 2.5M Denny.
